SMART Key Teach-in Device Universal – User Manual

1. Supported Features
The SMART Key Teach-in Device supports SMART models 450, 451, and 452. For some vehicles, a prepared Abrites transponder may be required.

Key Functions:

  • Key Synchronization over K-Line: Automatically establishes a diagnostic session with the SAM unit and synchronizes all available keys via K-Line.

  • Key Synchronization over CAN: Automatically establishes a diagnostic session with the SAM unit and synchronizes all available keys via CAN.

  • Start the Car without a Working Transponder: Allows the vehicle to start once when no working transponder is available. Ideal for moving the car in emergencies.


2. Using the Device
The device is user-friendly and requires minimal intervention. Eight switches on the device allow users to select the operation mode. Feedback is provided via red, green, and yellow LEDs. Proper switch settings are required for each function before starting.

Key Learning Procedure over K-Line (for SMART vehicles ≤ 2005)

  1. Insert a prepared key into the ignition switch and turn ON.

  2. Set switch 1 to ON and plug the device into the OBDII port.

  3. Device automatically establishes a diagnostic session and enters key synchronization mode.

  4. LEDs indicate progress: yellow and green LEDs turning OFF signals to switch Ignition OFF.

  5. Press the key buttons as required for multi-button keys. Synchronize all keys to ensure the vehicle starts.

  6. Successful completion is indicated by synchronous blinking of green and yellow LEDs (2 seconds ON / 2 seconds OFF).

Key Learning Procedure over CAN (for SMART vehicles ≥ 2005)

  1. Insert a prepared key and Abrites transponder into the Ignition Switch, turn ON.

  2. Set switch 2 to ON, using switches 5 and 6 to select the number of keys (1–4).

  3. Plug the device into the OBDII port; the device will start key synchronization.

  4. Observe LED signals:

    • Yellow & green LEDs OFF → switch Ignition OFF.

    • LEDs ON → switch Ignition ON.

  5. Repeat for additional keys. Confirm all keys by starting the engine individually.

Starting the Car without a Working Transponder

  1. Insert a prepared key into the Ignition Switch and turn ON.

  2. Set switch 3 to ON and plug the device into the OBDII port.

  3. Device activates; procedure takes about 5 seconds.

  4. Completion is indicated by synchronous blinking of green and yellow LEDs (2 seconds ON / 2 seconds OFF).


LED Feedback Guide:

  • Red LED (constant): Device powered.

  • Green & Yellow LEDs:

    • Asynchronous blinking: Data transfer between device and SAM unit.

    • Both OFF: Switch Ignition OFF and start key synchronization.

    • Synchronous blinking (2s ON / 2s OFF): Procedure finished successfully.
